In Kansas, we have all kinds of prey birds. Having been raised on a farm/ranch with all kinds of animals and livestock, I can say we never had problems with buzzards. Here, prey is plentiful and they prey on the sick, weak, vulnerable, and injured. It would be rare and unheard of for a buzzard to attack a small dog especially in a yard, as they work together in groups and eat their prey on the ground, they don't carry it off. However, hawks, owls and eagles all hunt by themselves and will carry off their prey and our little dogs are perfect sizes for them. We've lost more cats/kittens to hawks, owls, cyotes, but never buzzards. Always better to be safe however. Not worth taking any chances with any of them.
