I use breakaway collars hat I bought from eBay. It doesn't take much pressure on the collar for it to fall off, which makes it great for ID purposes and for placing a bell. I use it since a little someone is always underfoot, or if he bell stops ringing and I can't see him, he's definitely doing something naughty! I've come home to a collarless dog. Little stinker was trying to break into he kitchen. Kaji was happy and safe, and the collar was dangling on the gate leading to the kitchen.
