Let me start by saying that what you are describing is not constipation, but rather a decrease in the frequency of the stools. Constipation is characterized by hard, difficult to pass bowel movements.

Rice is considered a "low residue" food, meaning that it decreases stool volume and frequency while prolonging transit time through the intestines. That's why it's such a help to a dog with diarrhea.

Metrondiazole doesn't have constipation listed as a side effect, but it can cause some mild GI upset and decreased appetite, which would also lead to a decrease in the frequency and amount of the stool.
