When it comes to hotel discounts, you really don't need AARP.
When we hit the road and take the dogs, the hotel choices tend to be very limited so I do a lot of looking online at all the chains when I'm making reservations. In every case, the hotels that offer a special AARP rate also offer a generic "senior" rate that is exactly the same as the AARP rate.
I'm not really sure what is to be gained by AARP membership, I've never seen any advantage. They sell insurance and other financial instruments, like annuities (which are a rip-off in my opinion, no matter who is selling them). They claim to advocate for seniors, but if you disagree with their position (like me) then there is no reason to be a member. If you do agree with them, then the membership might be worth it to you.
