Sounds normal to me. I think they can sort of sence who will enjoy play and who wont. My aunt has two dogs, ones five and ones thirteen almost fourteen. The younger one must be at least four times the size of Chloe all long legged and skinny but very playful and gentle so Chloe LOVES his company. The thirteen year old one is fairly small in size(height), and quite large(weight) and moody (as you may probably expect for that age) and Chloe gives her a nice bit of safty zone space.
