Schatzie, in a perfect world...
But not everyone cares about whether or not they are hurting other people. They feel so passionate about their subject that they think, "Tough Sh_ _ if I hurt anyone's feelings, I am gonna be HEARD!"
There will always be people like that in this world. But hey, hearing a strong opinion, even if it hurts the original poster, gives everyone an opportunity to consider a line of reasoning they may never have thought of on their own.
I appreciate the heated debates, no matter how nasty they get because I always learn something. I try to get past the nastiness and just concentrate on the subject matter. I think the moderators do a pretty good job closing threads that are hateful, and I appreciate them very much.
I do think that having a "debate thread" is a recipe for emotional disaster, though. However, if having it keeps the other threads clean and simple, let's go for it!
