I can answer that one, the pictures are so small, that they are uploaded before you even hit "save changes", older slower computers on dial up took longer to upload. So when you hit save changes, the pictures already uploaded and the computer thinks you are trying to upload something else, so it says "invalid file". This is true for both the avatar and profile pictures. However when album says that, it's usually means the picture is too big or are not the correct forms of file. Certain file types don't work in the albums, but it will tell you which file types you can use.
