Dori is totally trained. It took 9 months of supervision and consistency. I taught her to ring the bells and her sitter taught her to use a doggy door and AstroTurf patio pad. The patio pad really came in handy during our several snow days this winter. I am retired, so she was never out of my sight. At 3 months, she slept through the night 8-9 hrs. in her kennel.
IMO the key is consistent routine and vigilance.
I am also a big advocate of crate training.
