Thanks for the advice everyone. I spent yesterday morning exploring all the carrier options locally (not that many! ) and wound up buying one from Target, of all places, for $20! It's not too big, and seems to be fairly well made. I figure this can get me through the first year (good point re: chewing), and then once I have a better idea of his eventual size I can always upgrade to a nicer/more expensive bag. My husband was glad I went the cheaper route, but I told him this was just a temporary solution! Oh, and I also went to Hobby Lobby to get fabric for a matching blanket and "pillowcases" for the carrier's padded bottom.
