Obviously you haven't experienced an over-eater, lol. I don't have this problem with Jackson thankfully but I dogsit for a Rottweiler and Lab who will literally eat until they puke. The Lab is 9 months old and the Rottie is 1 year old. I know the Rottie came from a great breeder! The owners have tried everything... they do leave water out for the Rottie but he stays in a crate all day with no water. They had trainers suggest leaving food out all day so that he knew it was always going to be there... well, that just does not work for him, lol. So I think it just depends.

I have water available all day to Jackson but at night, he is baby gated in my bedroom with me so he has no access to water throughout the night. If he did, he'd probably go drink a bunch and then have to go in the middle of the night. Even as a pup, I'd take it away from him at night.
