Well from what I have researched the blood transfusion only "aides" in the theraphy. Steroids are what are used to actually suppress the immune system to allow the body to quit attacking the healthy red blood cells. The blood transfusion will give more cells to fight back with. Hope that makes some sense. So without the use of steroids, then the blood transfusion would have been unsuccessful. I am not a vet but found this info from the US Library of Medicine, also again in the Veterinarian guide to medicine.
