I agree that a larger area would be better. An x-pen would be great but you have to make sure he is not a climber. Pups can get hurt really bad climbing out of x-pens. If you could gate off the kitchen that would be nice. You just have to make sure there is nothing he can get into. Puppies are good at getting into trouble. The only other possibility would be a puppy sitter or if you had a relative that would want to watch him for the day. How big is your pup? If he is a tiny boy then I would worry more about leaving him alone so long.
