I would put him in an xpen, or small room so that he doesn't have to spend an entire day on top of his piddle pad, which will undoubtedly be well used. Otherwise, you are going to come home to one messy and unhappy pup.

ETA: 6-8 hours without food or water is not advisable at that age.
