It can last hours to days. As long as the incision site looks good and his gums are pink and wet, it shouldn't be a problem. If it has been more than a couple days, I'd start to be pretty concerned. You can always call the vet to get some reassurance.

Some of the injectable anesthetics used can cause this. And the pain meds... Some will be out of it the entire time they are on pain meds depending on which ones given. They shouldn't be out of it for several days from anesthesia though.

If he is truly unresponsive (not responding to stimuli), then that would be an emergency. If you rub him or talk to him, etc. and he moves a bit, then that's normal..
