Default Dentist, Oral Surgeon, Or Someone Else??

If you had a tooth that continued to become abcessed even after a root canal, and a history of previous serious infection of the facial bones, would you continue to go to a dentist? Or would you seek further medical advice, and if so who/where? This is for my daughter, who is in a college town and needs to make an appointment there because she can't get home. I am not sure at this point where/who to advise her to go. Where would you start over, medical or dental? I am concerned that it is re occuring. She's not feeling pain (yet) because the tooth has a root canal, but last night the abcess popped. I know, gross. So I have no idea how far the infection is at this point.
