I had mine microchipped and it seemed to bother the techs doing it more than it bothered my 2. They were around 5lbs at the time of chipping.
They are now 7 and 6.5 and still no issues.

I did have a larger rescue that was with me for a short time. I took her to the vet shortly after I got her because I felt something on her side. It turned out to be her chip. The vet said that they can travel no matter how big or small the dog is. Because they are smaller, most people run their hands over their whole body and would feel it if it moved.

I would microchip the puppy though. A tattoo will fade or become distorted and a collar can be removed.
