We are waiting for his X-pen to arrive, and will let him sleep in a bed inside of his pen once we get it, but for the time being we have him in his crate and he HATES IT! He whines and barks and scratches at the sides. We have tried ignoring it, saying "NO" sternly, and even gotten a spray bottle and sprayed his face with a little water if he barks. It kills both of us to leave him in there like that, but we know if we just let him out he will continue it. My fiance ended up sleeping next to his kennel on the floor because it was the only way Bentley would calm down. He slept from 10-2:20, woke up to go potty, but was up again at 4:30 ready to go for the day. Is this typical? How long should they sleep and any advice as to how to get him to enjoy his crate and not bark and whine? We live in an apartment so its hard for us to just ignore it all night and make our neighbors listen to it too!! We love this little guy and want to make him as comfortable and adjusted as we can!!

Thanks!!
He's too young to be spraying his face with a water bottle. Your fiance did well by sleeping next to his crate. If it is a small crate, perhaps you could put it on the bed next to you for the time being or put it on a nightstand next to your bed. He just wants to be close to you and doesn't feel secure yet. He's just a baby. Be patient.
