Default Skittish Yorkie....anything I can do to help this?

Our Yorkie Riley is 2 years old, we have had him since he was 7 weeks. He is precious and we are all so crazy about him. He gets lots of attention and affection everyday. Lately he seems to be more skittish than before, for example, and this is almost funny....he is scared when I chew gum. For real, one day I put in a stick and noticed he started shaking, since then it has happened two other times. Evidently, I pop it occasionally without realizing it and he is scared of loud popping noises. Also, I can't get out the nail clippers without the same reaction. I think he hates getting his nails clipped at the groomers and relates these sounds to that. I feel so bad, I try to comfort him, but it doesn't matter. I guess I just can't chew gum around him anymore!

Anyone else have a similar experience? Is this just the nature of a Yorkie? He is our first, so we are still learning! Thanks!
