What a cute story!!! Your 3 year old sounds like a real cutie pie! And really smart too!!! I remember my granddaughter called me mama all the time when she was little. My daughter and I never knew if she was talking to her or me. Then we figured out that my granddaughter couldn't say grandma and so my daughter told her to call me Mimi - which she did immediately and still does to this day (9 years old). So, I guess it is common for little ones to have a hard time with names and want the name to be something else!
