The hemostat method may be helpful when placing the show bow, but for making the actual topknot, I believe wrapping the band like you would on your own hair would be easier and more precise. Seems like it would be difficult to comb and part the hair, hold it, then get it perfectly into a little band with a hemostat. Maybe it is a matter of preference.
