I worked for a Major League Baseball club and had close connections to the city's football and hockey teams, and I would advise you not to spend your money on autographed items. The only way to be absolutely sure that an autograph is authentic is meeting the player and having the item signed in front of you. Second most reliable source is the ball club itself; often they will have charity events with silent auctions.

Most of what is out there is bogus, forged. Don't be fooled by "certificates of authenticity."
