Both my yorkies have traveled- like others said, you can hold your dog, I always do.

Also, check with the airline for seat choices- I always fly JetBlue and they don't allow dogs in the middle seat because the electronics for the tv's are stored there and they say it gets too hot for the dogs. I like to choose a window seat because I feel like it is the most out of the way and quiet for the dog.
