Vets usually are not that into home cooking since most owners do not do it correctly. Most vets will support home cooking if you tell them you are consulting with a board certified veterinary nutritionist. Regular vets have little training in nutrition, but all of them understand what it means to be board certified and they are very respectful and deferential to the specialists. If they aren't, then that is a closed-minded vet that I'd drop (and have!).

I use board certfiied vet nutritionist Dr. Remillard and think her credentials are hard to beat. For $25 as ladymom said, you can buy a diet through her website. Teddy eats the "Chicken and Brown Rice with vegetables for Dogs" that I got from there.
