If you don't mind the size of a DSLR, there is far less focus lag with an SLR than a point and shoot camera. This means that in shorts of animals, children, and sports, most likely you won't miss the photo when the subject moves. Each kind of camera definitely have its applications, but for action shots you are better with a DSLR than a point and shoot. Nikon is offering a $100 rebate on the D3100 and many other DSLRs until February 26th. This is the first price drop that I've seen on that camera. It has gotten nice reviews for both photos and video. Canon makes excellent cameras also and you should choose a camera that feels good in your hands, cameras. I started off with Canon SLRs and still own two them, but I have prefer Nikons and have been using Nikons for over twenty years. Whenever you decide to purchase a camera, I'd be happy to help if you have any questions.
