As far as I know, it IS for scent reasons. They aren't spreading THEIR smell, but they want to take the scent from whatever they are rubbing on. Be it something really nasty outside that they like, but we hate OR the scent they are used to having on themselves from their environment.
They usually do it after a bath because when you give them a bath it puts a really obnoxious (to them) scent on them that is really different and noticeable. The idea is that it is a sort of survival instinct. f you smell like a fruity, yummy little thing instead of a normal blending smell, you stand out to everything around you (including predators or, as the case may be, prey).
