If you are not prepared for it; sometimes it is hard to handle an elderly dog and reconcile yourself to the changes that come with age ~ even for dogs.

She may want to spend more time on your lap because she doesn't have the energy and interest she used to for toys and playing.

She may be having accidents more often because sometimes incontinence comes with age ~ for humans too!

Try and see her for the dog she is now; she is not trying to 'get back at you' by peeing on the carpet; dogs don't work like that. She may not be able to hold it any longer; or she may forget her housetraining. Prepare for that.

Be sure her area is clean and comfy; if she can't jump up like she used to - make sure she has nice bedding on the floor.

Have her checked out by a Vet; consider Anipryl if her health is otherwise fine.

Don't hit her anymore; I promise you that when she is gone ~ you will feel guilt for every time you swatted her with anything. You won't realize how much you will miss her until she is gone. Her favorite spot on the couch or the bed ~ forever empty.

Hang in and read up on aging dogs and what you can expect and how best to handle.
