A pet photographer I know uses painter's canvases (amongst other things - such as painting one wall black that was heavily texturized prior to painting) and spray paints some of them. Hangs them on a pvc (or pcv???) pipe - in a curtain rod fashion near the ceiling and just slides whatever one she doesn't want out of the way. She has used a sheet also.
The shots always come out nice.
