I hope this is ok to post. This is a copy of an email I received from the Assistant Director of the Head Start I work for. Without our funding, we won't be able to continue to help families find jobs, find housing, give them independence and give their children a head start in learning.

On Friday, the US House of Representatives introduced details in H.R. 1, a proposal to slash many important services during the current fiscal year. This included a nearly 22.4 percent cut to Head Start that would result in over 200,000 children losing services nationally (approximately 22,000 in California) and many Head Start employees losing their jobs. The US House will be debating this bill over the next week and then the Senate will look at it in the following weeks.
Up until now, all the rhetoric in Washington about budget cutting has been abstract. Now that House leaders have revealed this proposal, we need to respond. If adopted, this would be the largest funding cut in the history of Head Start.
We encourage you to take action in various ways:
-Send an email to your Member(s) of Congress urging them not to cut funding for Head Start. It will only take 30 seconds to complete. Click here to send your Members of Congress the email.
-Promote a call-in to your Congress Members this Wednesday, February 16th. Sample message:
I urge you not to cut Head Start funding.
The funding cuts proposed in H.R. 1 would result in over 10,000 empty classrooms nationwide. They would kill 50,000 jobs directly and would make it difficult for 200,000 parents to stay in their current jobs.
Most importantly, the cuts would deprive over 200,000 children of access to learning. Each of these losses would inflict damage in our own community.
In this difficult time, more than ever, we need wise investment in productive jobs and educational opportunity. I urge you again not to cut Head Start funding.
