I don't have any information for you in regards to the corrective surgery for hernias. I can say that I have had 2 dogs, a dauchsand at about age 10 and a peke at age 18/19, both of whom had hernias and both of whom died as a result. As I said, I was 10 the first time and have little recolection about it, but as for my peke: now I was 15 when I got him and do not remember all of the details regarding the diagnosis, but I do remember we were told that they were not uncommon and he would most likely experience complications if he became overheated. He stayed indoors in the cool, but apparently he got to hot anyway. It ruptured and he died as a result.
Because of this, I personally would stay clear of a dog with the problem present. This is not to say the pup won't live a long life and it is not something that can't be corrected. Just my opinion based on passed experience. My outlook is, if by not selecting that pup you can eliminate one possibility, why not do so. I realize that this is not fair to pups who have it...like I said, this is just MY preferance.
