Many of them will get sick while actually being carried in a carrier because they have the additional motion being caused from your body movement. Think of how easy it is to spill a cup of liquid while you are actively walking and moving around.

I have not heard of anyone using Bonine. Generally, Dramamine can be given in small doses to pets, but Bonine is a larger, longer lasting dose than Dramamine. Since the carrier will be still on the flight, he will most likely be okay - especially if he doesn't usually get sick while in a carrier in the car.
