In rescue once, we had and I fostered a little girl who was a stray from a puppy mill. She had a skin issue where her skin was sticky and her hair had fallen out and she smelled. She had to be given a bath every day and use special shampoos, creams, lotions perscribed by the vet. The smell did not abate until much later when her hair grew back. I don't know for sure, but I think it may be a puppy mill smell? Here is what I would do:
I would have her shaved and see if the smell goes away.
Her hair will grow back. I'm surprised the vet did not tell you what was causing the smell. Yes, it could be the ear infection............
