Scooting can be a sign that the anal glands are full, or parasites are present, or the hair around the anus is bothering the pup.

If the glands are not expressed, they can become impacted/infected and rupture. I prefer natural means to express the glands when possible. The poop needs to be firm and large enough to express the glands that are at the opening of the anus. I feed my boys half a teaspoon of baby sweet peas with lunch and dinner for this purpose. Many people use green beans.

With either peas or green beans, use the frozen variety, no salt added. Put a few in a bowl, cover with a little water, microwave, and cool with cold water before serving. Chop up the beans in small pieces, or mash the peas. Doesn't take much with a small pup. Too much will cause diarrhea.

If your pup's anus is swollen or red and the scooting continues, have your vet check out your pup.
