Missouri is unfortunately known for its puppy mills but yet Stray Rescue of St. Louis is being honored as the top animal shelter in the country.
St. Louis (KSDK) -- Stray Rescue of St. Louis is being honored as the top animal shelter in the country Saturday.
The distinction is being bestowed by Lost Pet USA at the 56th Annual "Purina Pro Plan" Show Dogs of the Year Awards in New York City.
Stray Rescue founder Rand Grim credits shelter staff, volunteers, and supporters for working tirelessly to put programs in place to help homeless animals in St. Louis and provide education and outreach to the community.
The shelter took over animal control services for the city of St. Louis, and also took in all the dogs at the city's pound on Gasconade.
In addition, Stray Rescue opened a new facility on Pine Street in St. Louis which provides medical care, food, and shelter to animals waiting for a new home.
