^^If you do use scissors for the edges, exercise caution and work in very bright sunlight so that you can clearly see the edge of the ear flap through the hair. You can also wet the hair along the edge to make the ear flap more visible, taking care not to get any water in the ear canal. I also like to slightly pinch the edge of the ear flap between my fingers to prevent accidents.

A Wahl Peanut trimmer is a great tool. They are available at some Sally beauty supply stores and on Amazon for about the same price as a decent mustache trimmer.
