Yes,they started out larger I am aware of this fact...however through selective breeding practices they became what they are today, under 7 lbs, ears erect, silky coat, etc. All the byb's not giving a crap about what dogs they're putting together are creating, not only grossly small yorkies, but teapots as well (which, once again, I'd rather see the larger ones than smaller ones) and now they have "cute terms" to jack up their price tags...just saying, I'm sure people though the term "teacup" was cute when it first came out to describe the runts of the litter, little did they know what would become of that term.
I do love the term teapots though, it really is a cute way to describe the larger yorkies
