Brushing the hair isn't enough, you have to follow by using a comb close to the skin, otherwise, you might miss a slight tangle that turns into a mat. I used Cowboy Magic on Joey when he was a puppy, when he was more prone to matting, especially under the arm, or front legs as some people say.
I used it before a bath to make sure all tangles were out before I got him wet.
