It takes patience and persistence. With a puppy, I take them outside every 30-45 mins, to the same place and lower my voice and repeat, go potty, now. When they do, give a treat (slice, peeled apple and Cheerios are great), lots of praise in a higher pitched voice. As they age, you can wait longer. It takes about 9 months to a year for a small dog, unless you are one of the lucky ones. You should also watch your puppy closely, so if he has slept, played or eaten, go ahead and take him outside. I had a friend actually clip the leash to her when she was cooking, so her puppy could be watched closely, they can potty so fast. |
