BUN in and of itself can simply imply dehydration. And often, even a slightly dehydrated/stressed dog will have a slightly elevated BUN. For example, a pre-op dog's BUN will often be high bc of the no-food-or-water after a certain time, and the fact they're burning fluids in the kennels while waiting for surgery.
