This is all too true. Which is why, I have always told people to leave the wildlife alone. Too many people have taken babies from their Moms, through misguided intentions.
My last one, was less than 3 days old, abandoned by his mother during an electrical storm because he could not walk, and follow her. Sadly, it is still survival of the fittest.
The good news is that we were able to foster him, and return a healthy fawn to the wild, and he was adopted by another doe and her fawn.
