I think that you can be the most competent owner ever, but there are certain things that only a mother dog can give her puppies. They need to learn things from their own species...how to socialize, for example.
Also, the health of the puppy is always a concern. Hypoglycemia, of course. As someone who adopted an adult dog with Liver disease, I can tell you that if I ever did get a puppy, I would really want to wait until the dog was old enough to be bile acid tested. Having a sick animal you are attached to is so difficult. The emotional cost is greater than the cost of any vet bill.
