On the bottom of the paws, I trim enough so that hair doesn't obstruct the pads. My boys don't have thick hair in their pads, so that is enough. If your pup has thick hair that collects dirt and debris, or the hair mats in the paw, then you will have to work harder. The primary thing is to keep the paw clean and keep the hair from covering the pads or obstructing the nails.
