they will fall off dead in the bathwater. I don't use it except when we have an outbreak because I am sure it dries out the skin. Also ... borax dusted around the cornors kills fleas. In Miami the fleas never die.. we never have freezes to kill them so it is always flea season.
I was also told you should wait 2 to 3 days AFTER bath to put on the topical. Don't know if that makes sense -- but something about the natural oils in the skin/fur is what spreads out the topical.
20 years ago I was told that Joy dishwashing soap could be used because of the lemon in it would kill fleas. Here in VA, fleas and ticks NEVER die either. We just had 14" of snow a couple of weeks ago and my DH just picked two ticks off of a dog that was left behind by our neighbor(another thread!!! ARGH)
