Default adequan

Dpes anyone have experience with adequan shots. My little guy is ten years old and is starting to limp some, especially in cold weather. The vet has not done any tests to determine for sure whether it is artheritis or not.
He has said that due to pancreatits and bladder stones the only thing that will work for him is adequan shots. One a week for 8 weeks and then one a month for the rest of his life. I really hate to put him through this. He limps sometimes, but never whines even when he is picked up. He also plays, runs and jumps....I just am not sure what to do. He is already on four meds for the bladder stones adn pancreatits, I hate to add something else to it.
Does anyone know anything about adequan? Does it work? Are you able to give th shots yourself or does the vet have to do it? Those of you who have experience with your babies having artheritis...what were the symptoms? Did they cry or just limp? I hate the idea of him being in pain, but don't want to put him on shots unless it is really necessary.
Thanks
