I looked up the MSDS sheets on some dyes and on some shampoos, conditioners, sprays, etc. You can find the same cautions on each category. Everything you apply to your skin or your animals skin has the potential to cause a reaction. Be smart about it and do a spot test before you jump in and coat the dog in dye. Just like human hair dye tells you to do (which i'm sure most people don't do).

Clothes can too cause pain if the animal is not supervised when wearing them or if the clothes are left on too long. I've seen dogs with broken legs due to a clothing mishap. I've also seen irritated arm pits and inner thighs due to rubbing. And, the most popular problem from clothes is severe matting which can cut off circulation to areas of the skin. Sure it is the mat that is causing the pain, but the clothing caused the mat so it is indirectly causing the pain.

anyway, my point is, everything has the potential to cause harm if used improperly. Be safe, read directions, spot test, and watch your pets reaction. If they don't like it, don't do it.

If the clothes are matting the hair and or causing the skin to be irritated they can be taken off and then problem is solved. If you dye the dog and they get a rash even after washing the dog they might require a vet visit, creams, and things that will stop them from messing with the rash
