txshopper73....you saved Molly's life Kimberley,
Yesterday morning I got up to take Molly, she has 4 puppies, outside and noticed that she was having muscle spasms. We quickly called the vet and took her in. She had eclampsia, they gave her a shot of calcium and put her on fluids, kept her there for 4 hours. Now she is on calcium supplements given to us by the doctor.
If you hadn't posted your experience with Gracie, I never would have recognized the symptoms and been able to react so quickly. We caught it quick enough that her temperature hadn't risen and she was still able to stand. But the tremors in the legs was something I will never forget, holding her in my arms while my husband drove, the jerking of her little body was awful.
In all the years I've been breeding yorkies, I've never supplemented any of the girls, just kept them on a high quality dog food during and after pregnancy. Molly has only had 2 babies in the past and the extra 2 puppies this time must have been more than her body could handle. Grace has 2 puppies and is doing well, she is use to 5. Liz is due this week and the xrays show 4, which is more than she is use to....so we'll probably give her the supplements.
Anyway, I'll quit babbling.........thank you so much for posting your experience. It basically saved Molly's life, Molly, her puppies and I thank you.
