There are a few different types of pet safe hair dye. Manic Panic is a popular one, and Petedge has Top Performance. I used spray on food coloring on my yorkie for halloween but i dyed her tan parts, not the black. She too is a cotton coat.
It is harder to dye darker colors and the color might not stick. Make sure you apply the dye to a clean and dry coat. Don't do it on dirty hair like with people. Be very careful dying his head. You do NOT want to get it in his eyes or mouth. Use a paint brush and wrap in foil to set.
I have not used Manic Panic or Top Performance but I have seen it done by other groomers.
As long as you are using safe dye and the dog is not bothered by the experience then I see nothing wrong with it. My dog LOVED it. She got so much positive attention from people. I gave her a pink mohawk and pink legs. I think i made a thread about it here somewhere
