We used a synthetic grass pad for our 11 year old yorkie with success. I did fine it difficult to remove the odor over time. We had friends that took an extended vacation on their sailboat and taught their young yorkie to use a plastic container (similar to under the bed storage units) filled with a piece of sod that they purchased from the local home improvement store for about $3.00. They kept it out in the cockpit and periodically rinsed the grass and container with water. They reported no odor and great success when unable to get him to shore for potty breaks.
