I don't think you are being irrational either. I'd have a hard time working for or with the individual.
I surely hope that when she gets old and needs help that someone helps her and she remembers her poor doggie friend of 11 years.
I take exception to the vet's recommendation. You'd think that the vet would recommend rescue and PTS only as a last resort.
