When I took a dog to the vet to check on this, I was told to begin by waiting until the dog was not looking at me and clink to pan lids together. The dog should at least turn around. Mine didn't. SO he went for further testing.

If your dog wakes when you shake a rattle, I would think he's able to hear it. Maybe he's just ignoring you the rest of time? Schedule a visit with your vet to really get to the bottom of it.
