It definitely takes some time to get them used to it. lol
One of my girls will NOT let me. Both my dh and I have to be holding her and still, I can't get her to let me. Luckily, she is a chewer and has beautiful teeth. I use the Nylabones and just toss them when she starts making marks on them.
